How Cognitive Assessments Work

Cognitive assessments are a type of clinical assessment specially designed to help understand the impact a person’s mental health challenges are having on their ability to live their life to the fullest. These challenges  may be related to thinking, conceptual, communication difficulties, poor problem solving and general life skills. Through these assessments,  you and your support team will be able to understand your strengths and identify your personal barriers to living an independent and happy life.

In a broad sense, assessments are used as a diagnostic tool but for TLC it is only useful if it creates a mutual understanding. It is a useful tool for you to create an understanding of your experience as well as allows for TLC to provide a customized intervention to deal with your issues. Treatment is always available, but getting a targeted approach to treatment is the priority!  This process assists us to set up  mutual collaboration with you.

As with labels, it is important to understand that psychological tests are not one-size-fits all. As psychologists, we pick and choose a specific set of assessments and tests for each individual person. So many of us struggle to find the words to explain our experience. Assessments are designed to help us communicate how we experience the world.

The important thing to remember is there is no pass or fail. This is not something you study for or are penalized for based on the result. These assessments are a conversation starter. It creates a dialogue with our clients from both a clinical and personal narrative. Remember, psychological testing isn’t like taking a multiple-choice exam that you either pass or fail. Rather, psychologists use information from the various tests and assessments to reach a specific diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

We understand that the idea of an assessment or ‘test’ can feel overwhelming and often can create a fear of judgment. We often tell people that this is about curiosity. The more information we can gather about you and your experience allow us (including you) to understand what support will be most beneficial.

Clinical assessments allow us to understand and identify all different experiences from dementia, personality characteristics, IQ, learning problems, early indications of intellectual disabilities such as autism, ADHD, and memory loss among many other things.
