What is Person-Centered Care?

Person-centered care has become a common phrase used by Allied Health Professionals.. So much so, that it has in some ways become diluted and lost its meaning.  So, what does person-centered care mean to us?

We see each and every person as an individual. That means that each person has lived a unique life with their own lived experiences. It is those  experiences that make up their view of the world, relationships, hopes and dreams. TLC embodies this by insisting that this person-centered approach is formalised in the first step and it comes down to one key step.

Listen. Listen. Listen.

Before deciding any diagnosis or treatment plan, we spend up to four weeks with each person listening. Yes – listening. What may seem like a simple act has the largest impact. By spending our time listening, we are able to understand their daily life, life experiences and emotions. It gives time to know the individual outside of a clinical interview and allows reflection of the facts and the feelings of the individual.. It has been our experience that this builds a foundation of trust with each person. A trust  built on understanding and empathy.  which creates a safe space for a therapeutic alliance.

From this we can develop a treatment plan that is in line with what each person needs and is willing to do. Time and time again, this has been proven to ensure that we are able to offer sustainable and impactful support to each and every person.
